From the rugged beauty of Vancouver to the rustic shores of Halifax, Canada is home to some of the world's greatest cities. Every Canadian city has tastes and traits that make it truly unique, and this diversity shines through in local cuisine.
This Canada Day, Renée's Gourmet celebrates our country's diversity with delicious recipes for salads that reflect the culture and characteristics of seven great Canadian cities.
Renée's Gourmet and the Canadian Culinary Federation have invited professional chefs and cooks from across Canada to participate in our Great City Salads Competition in honour of seven of Canada's most vibrant cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.
Chefs from across the country have submitted delectable, quick & easy main course salad recipes representing the city of their choice. Their recipes showcase each city's geographical, historical, cultural & culinary influences through local ingredients.

The seven winning salads have been chosen! The judges’ panel (pictured above) included well-known Canadian food writer and Gardening Life Magazine food editor Dana McCauley, Chef John Higgins of George Brown College Chefs School in Toronto, Corporate Chef Consultant Mark Wilson and Renée’s Gourmet co-founder Renée Unger.
Congratulations to Chef Eileen Campbell! |
Her recipe, Shwarma Chicken, Maple Apple and Old Cheddar Salad representing Ottawa, was chosen as the overall Canadian winner. Her salad combines fresh produce from the Ottawa Valley with an international flavour that recognizes Canada’s multiculturalism, topped off with a splash of Renée’s Gourmet Sweet Onion Vinaigrette.
Among other prizes, Chef Campbell will receive a charitable donation in her name to Friends of We Care.
